“…to live the life which he had imagined,..”

A little bit of Dreaming..

I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he had imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

–Henry David Thoreau – Walden, or Life in the Woods

About a year or so ago on one of “those days” one of “those days” where everything seems foggy and where “grumpy” seems to have set up camp and shows no sign of leaving. I was angrily cleaning out yet another closet full of STUFF and came across a pile of old Mother Earth New magazines. I sat on the floor in the closet nearly in tears, saying to myself ” will I ever get there…will I ever be able to simplify my life and become sustainable or am I fighting a battle that is impossible to win in this modern day world”

So, I decided to stop attempting to finish the closet and just let the toddler (Tarzan) continue to contently destroy what I had managed to organize. I stopped climbing my uphill battle with organization and I started creating a dream board right there on the floor in our school closet (sounds silly I know). It ended as a very unattractive, inspiration board or maybe a better name would be …Dream Board. I put it up in my laundry room in I hopes that it would help me stay focused on where I really needed to be, where I wanted to be and to be real about where I was.

Things I dream about…

Being able to eat and live in harmony with the seasons and Nature

SIMPLICITY

LIVING ON LESS

Raw Truth ( not the book although I’m sure the book is good, I just haven’t read it) and good Wine..who doesn’t want that?

greenhouse… or, just a creative way to protect our plants from this hot Texas sun

Healthy Soil and a well established organic Garden

Keeping my babies Grounded & creating a safe place, where they are allowed freedom to explore and connect with Nature

SUSTAINABILITY

Healthy, happy animals (Oreo was very interested in my plans)

Healthy children being fed the best food available, the kind we grow ourselves

“By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands — your own.”

–Mark Victor Hanse

Today 5/25/2012 I found Alayna ( our 5 yr old) sitting on the back porch looking at my board, which had fallen off the wall and peaked her interest.

“oh, you want Dad to build you a cottage?” AJ

” yes, someday” Me

“look mom, you have these chickens now” Me

“Oh yeah, we sure do” Me

” and your garden looks just like this” Alayna ( it by no means looks like that..lol but from her eyes it does)

“yes, we are growing a lot of those things this year” me

”Oh, this is your favorite wine..haha..you wanted more of this? Wow Mom, we have a lot of these things”  ~ Alayna

We haven’t built a little stone cottage with a root cellar/ tornado shelter, a lot of the things on my list are still just in the dream stage & we are still very far away from being a sustainable farm but we aren’t as far as we once were.

I didn’t make a list at the beginning of last year and aggressively start checking things off, the few things that have happened here, have happened because our hearts deeply long to simplify, they long to live off our land….the rest just happened because it was meant to happen. It is happening one little bitty thing at a time….even when we lost focus a bit our hearts didn’t.  So, I don’t know when that day will come when I can really say that we have truly simplified our life or that we are living off of our own land but I really do believe that…………. it will happen.

“I look out at the world today and I see a time of great economic uncertainty, a time when so many safety nets are being shredded, a time when the planet is groaning under the weight of our out-of-control consumption. In such circumstances, anything we can do to both create financial freedom and lesson our global footprint is more than a good thing. It is survival imperative.” ~ John Robbins

I don’t know how it has been for you but for me there was THAT MOMENT… the moment when I realized how desperately I wanted to simplify, when my heart began longing to be gentle and kind to this beautiful earth, to eat healthier & possibly even begin to live off my own land. I know that for me the idea of ever reaching the place where my life and surroundings represented my new found goals and priorities seemed overwhelming and even untouchable. If by some chance you’re are feeling overwhelmed and even frustrated at how far from your goal you may seem at this moment. All I can say to you, is this…

Connect & spend some time just listening ( in my case STOP spinning long enough to hear)…

Once you know what you need to do, be patient and just start moving in that direction..

One little bitty step at a time.

Barefoot Mama

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it.”
